Oh. My god. This post is sooooo straight.
May. 26th, 2001 10:42 pmI doubt that anybody who bothers to read my journal on a regular basis is actually guilty of this. However, even if I am preaching to the choir, I have to get this off my chest:
Never, ever, express your dislike of something by saying, "That's so gay." Gay is not a synonym for stupid. There is absolutely no reason to equate the one with the other. Furthermore, using a phrase like that hurts and demeans gay people everywhere.
Honestly, people, would you ever express your dislike for something by saying, "That's so Hispanic" or "That's so Jewish"? I didn't think so. Why, then, would it be acceptable to use a term like "That's so gay"?
Oh, and while we're on the subject, let's stop using the phrase "That's so retarded" too. People who have mental retardation are not stupid. Their brain development is just different. Stupidity is a choice. Let's keep the criticism where it belongs-- with stupid people, not people with mental retardation.
And for those of you who already know all this stuff and who don't use such phrases, take your tolerance a step further: challenge people who do use these phrases to think about them, and to use alternate ones.
Thank you.
